Lido beat Welshpool and make the final

This squad of players today took Afan Lido FC into its biggest day in it's 40 year history.

At Park Avenue Aberystwyth Afan Lido were long shots and underdogs against Euro hopefuls and one of the top teams in welsh domestic soccer. But some one forgot to tell our players that today, as we took the game to Welshpool and should have won without going to penalties on the chances and possession we enjoyed.

We were 1-0 done at half time to an Aden Shannon goal, but Steve Parry drew us level on 72 mins and Welshpool did had the chance to go 2-0 up but missed a penalty.

Extra time remained goalless and we came out 7-6 winners in a nail biting penalty shoot out.

We now await the winners of tomorrow's 2nd cup semi final between Llanelli and Carmarthen.

Great day for the red half of town.

The news on Dan Williams leg injury doesn't make for good reading, It is looking like Dan could be out for a minimum of 3 weeks.

In the latest training session for the first team, the dynamic duo (Evo & Phil) asked the players if they wanted to spend time practising penalties, to which they unanimously replied "don't worry it won't go that far" Welshpool beware the boyz are rearing to go.

Merthyr gain revenge on youths

The Youths were away tonight against league leaders, who were no doubt looking for revenge on the defeat our lads dished out to them last week at the Marston. They did get revenge and won well by a 5-0 scoreline, and ended our league unbeaten run, and realistically any chance of winning the league. We are now 7 points adrift and have also played a game more.

Lido gain victory over Quins at a price

Tonight's victory and 3 points were marred by a bad leg injury to Dan Williams, who was taken to hospital to check on the leg. In one incident 3 players got their marching orders, Carl Evans and 2 Grange players.

Any way back to the game tonight. We took the lead on 9 minutes with a goal from Carl Evans, but the lead didn't last long, we tended to sit back after going ahead and Grange got an equaliser on 26 minutes.

Craig Jones restored our lead  in the 35 minute and in the 2nd half Liam McCreesh got the 3rd goal which sealed the victory and ends Quins 3 match unbeaten run, it also moves us up 1 place to 5th ahead of Aberaman on goal difference.

Our under 12 Reds took on top of the table Porthcawl in a game where something had to give, Porth have won all 10 games this season and our Reds have won all 9 games.

In the end it was the home side Porthcawl who just came out on top winning by 3-2. And their lead at the top is now extended to 6 points.

Our under 11's had a 11 a side game against our under 12 Blues who had a free Saturday. And the elder boys came out 3-2 winners (Though the 11's gaffer swears one was off side:)

The under 10's Rangers were at home against Porthcawl A and ran out very easy winners beating Port 8-0.

1st team draw and youths beat Merthyr

Tonight the first team were held to a 1-1 draw against Taffs Well, we went behind to a goal in the 68th minute, but Ianto scored the equaliser in the 73rd minute, but could not get a winner.

Better news for our youths who were at home to table toppers Merthyr Tydfil, the lads came out 3-1 winners to take our unbeaten league season's tally to 16 games, it was Merthyr's first league defeat of the season.

It puts the team to within a point of the leaders, but they have two games in hand. Our scorers were Steve Hughes,  Corey Thomas and Remi Whitelock.

Pontypridd match updates

Tonight's starting line up.

Brian Thomas - Chris Latham - Steve Parry - Dan Williams - Justin Williams - Craig Martin - Liam McCreesh - Paul Evans - Ian Jones - Craig Jones - Greg Hurley.

Subs: Matt Lavis - Phil Holmes - Rory McCreesh.

Things didn't quite go to plan at the start of the match as Ponty got off to a flying start and took the lead in the 2nd minute.

Things took a turn for the worse on 26 minutes as Pontypridd doubled their lead to make it 2-0. Just before half time Ponty stamped their dominance on the game by adding a 3rd, and to make things worse for the Lido Liam McCreesh got sent off.

Half time Ponty 3-0 Lido.

The 2nd half Ponty took their foot off the gas, content to sit on their 3-0 lead and a player advantage, to see out a 3-0 home win.

Next up this Saturday we look to get back to winning ways when Maesteg visit the Marston.

No more updates tonight heading out for a surprise birthday party :)

Afan Lido Ladies league update

At long last I have been able to get my hands on the latest round of games played in the Ladies league and so been able to update the table.

Sunday's round of games saw three fixtures take place, Pontypridd who recently beat us 3-0, were demolished at home by UWIC 7-0, that win keeps UWIC 2nd on the tail of Pontardawe who beat the much improved Haverfordwest team 4-0. The other game saw Bridgend  end an 8 match winless streak as they beat Ferndale 4-3.

Next up for the Ladies team is on Sunday when Haverfordwest are the visitors to the Marston, we won that game 3-2 on the opening day of the season, but the Ladies of Harry West have put in some good performances over their last 4 games, drawing with Newport and Ferndale, they have suffered the same fate as the Lido team and that being a severe shortage of players, so it should be a good game well worth watching.

Under 11's romp home against Margam

On Saturday the under 11's under the leadership of Gaffer Holmsey, took on Margam at the Marston Stadium, and our young players equalled their highest win of the season, hitting Margam for eight. The final score was 8-1.

It was good to see most of the squad back together as some of the lads were available with no rugby commitments.

Merthyr extend lead in youths league

Merthyr took another small step in securing the Youth division west title yesterday when the easily saw off Pontardawe 4-1 at home.

The win see's them open up a 5 point gap at the top over us, and still with a game in hand, the only other team who catch us in 2nd place (West End) were also in action, when they played out a 2-2 draw at Neath.  West End are just 6 points behind us but with 3 games in hand.

Our side is next out on the 14th when they make the short trip to play Goytre Utd in the local derby.

 MAR-10

Neath open 5 point gap at the top

Neath extended their lead at the top of the table to 5 points over Pontypridd, Neath were 2-1 home winners over Maesteg Park.

Neath have taken over from Pontypridd as likely champions, as Neath extended their unbeaten run to 14 games, and 5 wins on the trot. Pontypridd were held 2-2 at Newport YMCA their 3rd draw in their last 5 games, and that loss of 6 points has allowed Neath to move clear.

Champions Goytre came out on top at Glenhafod Park beating Croesyceiliog in a tight scoring game 3-2, they now move up to 4th, ahead of Aberaman who were held to a 2-2 draw at Dinas Powys.

Ton Pentre remain 3rd with a comfortable 3-0 home win over homeless Bridgend Town.

So not a good day for the Lido results wise, if we win our games in hand over the teams above we would pass Pontypridd, Goytre and Ton Pentre, but even if we win the 6 games in hand against Neath we would still be a point adrift, so we cannot afford to drop a single point in the run in as long as Neath continue to surge ahead of the rest of the teams.

Tuesday against Pontypridd and Saturday against Maesteg could see us maintain our title hopes by claiming 6 points, or leave us with a seemingly impossible task if we don't.

First team squad turn to internal rivalry's

With no first team game this weekend and no training until Monday night, some of the squad have turned to other forms of soccer to keep themselves sharp and in tip top shape for the must win game Tuesday night against Pontypridd.

Two of those involved with alternative training were non other Gaffer Evo and top draw player Greg Hurley. But it turned out to be a one sided match up, a master vs. apprentice contest.

The game was FIFA 2007 and things went the way of the gaffer by a very close scoreline of

5-0 oouucchh!!!

So back to the drawing board Greg, you'll need heaps more practice to be on the same level as the Gaffer :)

Last weekend gets better and better

Last weekend just gets better, today I received an email from Geoff Davies telling me that our under 10's also took part in the Welsh 5 a side championships as well, and they are also Welsh champions, they played teams from Bridgend, Cardiff, Gwent, Rhondda and West Glamorgan, and won every game, and only conceded just one goal along the way.

Another excellent achievement by the club, under the leadership of coaches Kirk Thomas, Geoff Davies and Neil Thomas.

Our super achievers were: Aaron Davies (GK), Jake Howe, Aaron Goff, Harri Kain-Thomas, Jared Price, Matthew Morgan, Jordan Lloyd & Ethan Robinson.

Well done to all involved with the under 10's.

The under 10 Colts were also in action on Saturday, and the Colts won their 3rd game of the season beating Cwmavon 7 – 2.
They totally dominated the game and only let Cwmavon in when they were comfortably ahead and relaxed. Goal scorers were Callum Curtis 3, Joshua Thomas, Jordan Noakes 2 & Liam Lewis scoring his first goal for the club.
Man of the match went to Callum Curtis.

With all the excitement of today's cup tie against Port Talbot, we forgot to announce the other games on for the club this weekend.

The Reserves are in action at mid day looking to maintain their place at the top of the league, when they face Newcastle Emlyn at the Marston. A special note of thanks goes to Newcastle who were very obliging in agreeing to change the kick off time.

The 3rds are in action at 2:30 when they take to field away to Trefelin, this will be a tough game for the 3rds as Trefelin are currently 2nd in the table. They came out 2-1 winners in October when they met in our home league game.

Another record month for the website

The websites popularity continues to grow, with a new record monthly figures.

For February we had 9,483 (28 days) visits an average of 339 a day.

We also broke the daily record 3 times with 425, 528 and on Feb 28th we really raised the bar when we had 766 visits.

If these recent figures continue we will easily smash the 10,000 barrier for March.

The welsh soccer news continues to be the major attraction, attracting many non Lido visitors, plus the added spice of Saturdays game has brought more visitors, hopefully we can maintain the growing trend.
