report by Peter Reynolds
The
disappointing thing about this result was that Neath equalised
with virtually the last kick of the game.
Torrential rain and a strong wind influenced this game.
We played with
the elements in the first half and led 4-2 at the interval. That
was always likely to be insufficient and so it proved ---- just.
On 12 minutes the
Neath keeper held a Steve Parry shot just under the crossbar and a
minute later a Chris Latham effort went wide. We were not to be
denied however but the first goal came in somewhat bizarre
circumstances.
We were awarded a
free kick 45 yards out near the touchline, Dan Williams hoisted
the free kick into the box and in to the net for his first senior
league goal. Unfortunately within a minute Neath equalised from
another free kick. On 22 minutes Steve Parry took a free kick
which the keeper did well to turn over the crossbar. The resultant
corner was cleared but played back in for Liam McCreesh to head us
back in front. 3 minutes later Greg Hurley hit one from 30 yards
which the keeper saved but the shot had too much power and the
ball nestled in the back of the net. On 41 minutes Liam played
Craig Jones in, he drew the defender and the keeper and squared it
for Ian Jones to sidefoot into the empty net. A minute before the
break Neath reduced the arrears to give themselves a chance in the
second half.
Neath were unable
to break us down in the second half until the 65th minute when
they latched on to a poor clearance to net from 25 yards. Despite
continued pressure we didn't have many scary moments and with 10
minutes to go John Felton played Ian Jones in but the keeper
rushed out to narrow the angle and the chance was gone. A minute
into added on time Neath were awarded a free kick 40 yards out and
unfortunately for us they scored directly from the free kick. We
kicked off and the final whistle went!
