AFAN LIDO 4-0 MAESTEG PARK (Shamrock cup)
Match report by Phil Holmes

Maesteg started off brightly and gained two free-kicks in the first 4mins, both being well defended by Paul Evans and Justin Williams. They had a lot of possession but failed to trouble Brian Thomas in goals.

Whenever we did gain possession we seemed to lack quality in getting it to our two front men of Ianto and Craig. The ball seemed to be lofted rather than passed which was meat and drink for the Maesteg Centre-halves. One of which contained ex Lido player Leighton Jones.

On 35mins we received a free-kick left of the post 22 yards out. Shaun stood over the ball but was prevented from taking it quick by the referee. As the Ref stood away Ianto took the FK and placed the ball over the wall and into the top corner of the goal 1-0.

2nd half we had a lot more tempo and purpose to our play. Our possession and quality resulted in a ball being played into the box and amid a goalmouth scramble the ball bounced kindly for Ianto to swivel and volley a shot passed Wager from 8 yards 2-0.

The game was getting comfortable for our defence as they were seldom troubled. When Craig Jones was replaced by John Felton on 65mins it was only a matter of time when he would score his 7th goal of the season. That came after 10mins of being on in which Greg Hurley provided a pin point accuracy cross for an unmarked John Felton to glance a header into the bottom corner out of Wager's reach 3-0.

Matthew Lavis was replaced by Chris Latham on 70 mins in the centre of midfield and Carl Edwards replaced Ianto after 75.

John could've scored another only for him to lose his footing at the vital moment.

After a lengthy head injury the Ref played 6mins over. This benefited  us as Shaun pinched the ball 25yards out and linked well with Chris Latham only to wander into the box un-opposed and coolly slot the ball passed Wager 4-0.

The only disappointing outcome of the game was we picked up 6 bookings from over zealous refereeing. By far it wasn't a dirty game and certainly didn't warrant 9 bookings altogether.

We hope this doesn't have a detrimental affect on our season in future weeks with people missing games. Only time will tell.
