report by Peter Reynolds
It
took us six or seven minutes to settle but we then started to keep
possession and knock the ball around. After 11 minutes we
conceded a free kick it went to a Maesteg head but was straight at
Brian. A move started by Brian and included John Felton, Karl
Lewis, Shaun O'Leary, Paul
Evans, and Carl Edwards swept the length of the field but
ended with Chris Latham heading Carl Edwards cross over the bar. Paul
Evans and Dan Williams were solid at the back and Paul set
up Karl Lewis who tried his luck from the edge of the box but his
shot went wide. After 20 minutes Paul
Evans fed Craig Jones in his first game back from injury,
Craig gained about 50 yards, cut inside but was torn between
passing and shooting and Maesteg cleared the ball for a throw.
Midway through the first half Brian made a save from their 10 and
their 7 then fired wide from a good position. On 25 minutes, Ian
Jones and former Lido keeper Gareth Scantlebury collided with the
ball going for a corner which Scants cleared. On 28 minutes Scants
was substituted, Maesteg had a substitute keeper on the bench as
he was carrying an injury.
On
the half hour again we had a number of players involved in a
passing movement which ended with Carl Edwards shooting over the
bar. Chris Latham then picked the ball up in midfield, fed the
overlapping Craig Jones who found Ian Jones, he cut inside but
shot straight at the keeper. Chris Latham then took a quick free
kick and found Ian Jones who skipped past a couple of tackles but
shot wide from a good position. We took the lead after 39 minutes,
Carl Edwards won the ball in midfield, he found Craig Jones who
crossed and Karl Lewis headed home from about 10 yards for his
first league goal of the season. Just before half time Craig Jones
was fouled on the right, Shaun O'Leary crossed to Ian Jones who
headed against the crossbar and over for a goal kick.
Early
in the second half Paul
Evans headed a Dan Williams free kick wide. On the hour Ian
Jones won the ball on the half way, sped forward and fed John
Felton but with the defence opened up he had strayed offside. We
had a corner but was again headed over the bar by Paul
Evans, we gained another corner on 64 minutes, this time
Carl Edwards forced a save from the keeper. Maesteg's attacks were
few and generally cleared up by Paul
Evans, Dan Williams and Craig Martin. However on 69 minutes
Brian picked up a through ball and his long kick out Ian Jones
picked up and got into the box but a last ditch tackle cleared the
ball which Chris Piper hit first time from 25 yards forcing the
keeper into a superb save diving to his left. With a quarter of an
hour to go Maesteg had a free kick in a good position, luckily for
us the header went just wide with Brian beaten.
With
9 minutes to go we lost the ball in midfield giving Maesteg extra
bodies up front but again the cross was headed wide. We went down
the other end and Ian Jones fed Chris Piper who found Matt Lavis,
his first time shot from just outside the area, the Maesteg keeper
again produced a top class save tipping the ball over for a
corner. He was certainly keeping them in with a chance of a point
and heartened by that they went down and won another corner but we
cleared it.
In the last minute John Felton beat a couple of defenders on the
right and crossed into the box but we conceded a free kick before
the final whistle blew.
