Shamrock
Travel League Cup Final
Match
report by Peter Reynolds
We won
the Shamrock Travel League Cup with an unlikely scorer, Craig Martin
scoring directly from a free kick. It was the sides one hundredth
goal of the season and a first senior goal for Craig. Craig Jones
was named man of the match.
Goytre
had the first opportunity when they had a free kick 25 yards out but
Richard Ryan's shot flew over the bar. A Craig Jones cross was held
by the keeper under pressure from Karl Lewis and two minutes later
we had a free kick just inside the Goytre half for a foul on Liam
McCreesh. Dan Williams played it into the box and the Goytre
keeper punched the ball out of the area straight to Karl Lewis whose
first time shot went just over the bar. On the quarter hour Greg
Hurley took a free kick that the keeper flapped at and it went to
Carl Evans but before he could get any sort of touch he was closed
down and the ball was cleared. We should have been ahead after
17 minutes, Paul Evans fed Chris Piper on the left, he beat the
defender and crossed to Craig Jones eight yards out in front of goal
but he sliced his effort wide. We kept up the pressure and in
a five minute sequence Karl Lewis headed wide, Ian Jones headed over
the bar and a four man move only failed with a misplaced final pass
going to the keeper. Goytre broke and a dangerous cross was headed
clear under pressure by Paul Evans.
On 28
minutes we were awarded a free kick just outside the area, pity was
Liam was clear in the box when we were pulled back. The free kick
was cleared for a throw and from the throw Craig Jones put in
another testing cross which was again cleared. We had another
opportunity to take the lead in the 37th minute when Liam McCreesh
broke and fed Chris Piper, he chose the wrong option, shooting from
25 yards with Ian Jones free on his right. Brian Thomas made an
excellent save after 47 minutes when he managed to parry a fiercely
struck shot from outside the box and clear before anyone could
follow up. We went down the other end and Carl Edwards crossed
to Liam McCreesh but the Goytre defence managed to clear. After
55 minutes Ian Jones fed Chris Latham who lay the ball back for Paul
Evans but his shot went over the bar. On the hour mark we
continued to pressure the Goytre defence but no-one was getting in a
position to shoot then after 68 minutes both Carl Edwards and Craig
Jones had shots that flew over the bar. Goytre's Luke Bowen looked
dangerous and on 72 minutes he fired just wide from outside the
box.
After
80 minutes we had a throw level with the Goytre penalty area on our
right wing. From it we were awarded a free kick for a foul on Chris
Latham. Craig Martin took it and with his left foot curled the
ball just under the crossbar and into the
net. Goytre came back at us and they had a free kick 25 yards out
which Carl Evans headed out to Ian Jones, he passed to Carl Edwards
who won a throw deep in the Goytre half to relieve the pressure.
Goytre came back at us and won a corner on the left which they took
short and crossed, however it went behind for a goal kick.
