report by Peter Reynolds
For the second
successive home league game we had a player sent off. Sadly for us
the referee got it badly wrong. He sent Shaun O'Leary off on 62
minutes with what appeared a straight red 2 minutes after he gave
him a yellow. Shaun and two Ely players were booked but an Ely
player slipped right in front of our dugout and to everyone's
amazement, and the visitors glee, he sent Shaun off. The downside
of this is he misses Tuesday at Ton Pentre and the 29th at Neath.
It is safe to say
this wasn't one of our better performances but we weren't helped
by A) falling offside too readily and B) playing the last half
hour with 10 men.
We took the lead
on 13 minutes when four players beat the offside trap, Chris
Latham rounded the keeper and crossed for Ian Jones to nod into an
empty net. Ely pushed forward with a strong wind at their backs
and won a series of corners. From one of these Brian missed his
punch and the ball fell kindly for them to equalise (28
Mins).
We retook the
lead on 43 minutes when Ian got in behind the defence and squared
the ball for Liam McCreesh who side stepped a defender and score
with a right footed shot. On 47 minutes Ian Jones flicked on to
Craig Jones who raced from the half way line to the by-line and
crossed for Ian to fire a first time effort just wide.
Ely had several
free kicks in advantageous areas, most were straight at Brian but
one he made a terrific safe tipping the ball over for a corner.
With no respite for our defence an equaliser looked certain but
the lads dug in and made numerous last ditch blocks and tackles to
deny the visitors.
In the dying
minutes Matt Lavis played in John Felton and his shot hit the
outside of the post at the expense of a goal kick despite everyone
our side of the field knowing the keeper saved it.
There were 5
minutes of added time and John Felton should have sealed it in the
last minute but dwelt to long on the ball. There was still time
for us to get caught offside one last time, amazingly the
officials allowed Ely to take the free kick in our half, luckily
the ball was cleared to the sound of the final whistle.
