ELY RANGERS 1-2 AFAN LIDO
Match report by Peter Reynolds

We progressed through to the quarter finals of the Welsh Cup with a hard fought victory at Ely Rangers.
We were the first to press and Shaun O'Leary was too high with a free kick in the first minute of the game. He then put in a great cross to find Ian Jones whose header was straight at the keeper. On 8 minutes Ely had their first opportunity when they put in a superb cross that was cleared under pressure by Craig Martin. The ball went down the other end and Ian was just wide with a shot after good work again by Shaun O'Leary. Brian Thomas excelled after 22 minutes with a full length finger tip save at the expense of a corner. On 37 minutes Steve Parry fed Ian Jones and his cross just eluded the incoming Liam McCreesh. On 41 minutes Karl Lewis fed Greg Hurley whose 25 yard shot was straight at the keeper. In added on time we had several opportunities to score the best being a shot from Liam that was blocked by a defender at the expense of a corner and a visit to the physio!
The first five minutes of the second half we failed to get into the game but on 53 minutes a Steve Parry cross almost played Liam in. On the hour Ely made their first substitution and within seconds we opened the scoring. Liam played the ball through the defence for Greg Hurley to run through and as the keeper came out he shot to his right for his first Welsh Cup goal since Fields Park Pontllanfraith in October 2001.

On 65 minutes a great run by Karl Lewis looked as though it would reap dividends but a defender just managed to get in a tackle and win the goal kick. A minute later with more time than he realised Ian fired over from the edge of the box after he was played in by Liam McCreesh.

On 78 minutes we had the cushion of the second goal, good work on the left saw Steve Parry cross into the box the keeper came out and missed it and Ian with all the time in the world made sure. Carl Edwards then came on for Karl Lewis and he was immediately involved in a move with Liam McCreesh and Ian Jones which won us a throw in which unfortunately came to nothing. We played almost 6 minutes of added on time and Ely scored in 90 + 4 when Brian wasn't able to cut out a cross and their striker scored. There was still time for a couple of scares from free kicks in inviting positions but eventually the final whistle went to rapturous cheers from the travelling Lido support.
