ELY RANGERS 2-2 AFAN LIDO
Match report by Peter Reynolds

Once again we dropped points in a midweek away game and we also had Carl Evans sent off in his first game back. We almost went behind in the first minute when Ely had a free kick on the half way which bounced in front of Brian, he was troubled facing a low sun and only managed to divert it on to the crossbar and away for a corner at great difficulty. We had the same scenario after 4 minutes and this was obviously going to be a major factor in the first half if Ely had enough possession. Following the corner there was an almighty scramble in our goalmouth and eventually we managed to clear the ball. After 8 minutes we played the ball wide to Shaun Best who was making his first team debut and he placed a cross on Ian Jones head but from a good position in front of goal he headed wide. After 13 minutes we had a corner which was headed out to Paul Evans lurking around the penalty spot but his header went just over the bar. We took the lead after 20 minutes when Ian Jones took a free kick about 25 yards out centre of goal, the ball hit the wall but looped up over the keeper and into the net. Ely responded with an attack but shot straight at Brian from a good position. We went two up after 33 minutes determined play in midfield by Chris Latham won the ball, he passed to Ian Jones who fed Shaun Best, he crossed to the far post where Carl Edwards headed home. Five minutes before half time following a free kick Ely hit the bar with the ball going for a goal kick.
Ely had the first chance of the second half when Carl Edwards lost possession but from 15 yards they shot straight at Brian. Nine minutes into the second half Ian Jones cut in from the left and from 15 yards shot just wide. We got the ball in the net on the hour but it was adjudged to have gone out for a goal kick before Ian had crossed it. Ely made a couple of substitutions to try and get into the game and after mounting pressure they scored on 74 minutes. They attacked down the right and got to the by-line with no one making a tackle, the ball was crossed in low for their 11 to tap in from a couple of yards. Following the goal Carl Evans was sent off exactly why wasn't clear. On 81 minutes Ian Jones again cut in from the left and hit a screamer from 25 yards which beat the keeper but hit the post and went for a goal kick. It was to prove costly as Ely won a corner which we cleared but in a repeat of their first goal they equalised. On 90 minutes we should have lost the game, Ely broke and they hit the crossbar from about the penalty spot with our defence AWOL, the ball rebounded and they had a second go at it only for Brian to make an outstanding save to preserve a point.
