report by Peter Reynolds
We went down 4-1
in our final match with a much changed side from Monday and with
both Carl Payne and Remi Whitelock making their full debuts. The
only bright spot was Ianto scoring his 42nd goal of the season to
finish joint top scorer in the league.
We opened the
scoring after 6 minutes, our right wing corner was cleared but
picked up by Dan Williams who found Chris Latham, he played it
wide to Carl Edwards whose cross took a deflection and lobbed up
nicely for Ian to head past the keeper. Two minutes later we had a
free kick just inside the Caerleon half, Dan Williams found Carl
Edwards, his cross was headed goalwards by Ian but the keeper made
a diving save to his right. It wouldn't have counted however as
the linesman flagged for offside. Caerleon didn't cause us any
problem until the 17th minute when Jay just got a touch to a right
wing cross to take it off the head of the attacker, it was crossed
back in and cleared by Craig Martin.
Two minutes later
Carl Evans conceded a free kick on the edge of the box but Jay
held the shot. After 25 minutes we had a half chance to go two up
when Chris Latham picked up the ball in midfield and found Ianto,
he rolled it back to Craig Martin whose cross missed Chris Latham
and hit Remi Whitelock who was just behind him. Unfortunately the
ball went just wide of the post. Within a minute Caerleon were
level, a long ball through the middle caught out the back four and
their 11 raced into the area and shot past Jay giving him no
chance. We went straight down and from a good position Ianto
failed to get any power on his shot and the keeper dived to save.
Caerleon then got the ball in the net but the linesman our side
got something right by flagging for offside. We went 2-1 down on
35 minutes when their 8 shot from 30 yards giving Jay little
chance. Twice within a minute we almost equalised, first Ianto got
on the end of a Craig Jones cross and his first time shot went
just over the bar then Remi Whitelock tried his luck with a snap
shot from 30 yards which just missed the target. On 44 minutes we
went 3-1 down when another long through ball found us wanting and
Dan Williams grabbed their 11 to give the ref little option but to
give a penalty.
Caerleon started
the second half better than us and it wasn't until the 51st minute
that we attacked with any purpose. Chris Latham had blocked a
Caerleon shot and fed Craig Jones he carried the ball forward and
found Carl Payne who returned it to Craig but his cross was
cleared. Things didn't quite go for us in attack, Caerleon isn't
the best of pitches especially at this time of year and the game
became an endless long ball game. People like Craig Jones who like
to run with the ball at their feet can't on that pitch. Then on 69
minutes Chris Latham was sent off, he had been booked in the first
half but got involved following a foul by Dan Williams. Dan fouled
their 11 who appeared to butt Dan, Chris went in to 'lend a hand'
and was red carded, Daniel had a yellow, their 11 had nothing.
Several times in the second half their keeper threw the ball out,
from our position he was standing outside the area but the
linesman our side however wasn't in line with the area to confirm
it. He also missed a blatant trip on Craig Jones when he was just
outside the area so we didn't get the rub of the green with the
officials. With 10 minutes to go Jay made a good save from 10
yards then two minutes later Caerleon hit the post from 8 yards
and managed to turn the rebound over the bar from 3. The nearest
we came to scoring in the later stages was when Ianto turned
provider and Shaun Best hit a first time effort wide, then Corey
Thomas shot over when well placed. Then with a minute to go Dan
Williams needlessly handled in the area to concede his second
penalty which was duly despatch.
A disappointing
end to a successful season but even in tonight's game we gave two
youth players their full debut which must be to the club's
advantage in the future.
